Stephen Krashen's Theory of Second Language Acquisition
Ricard Schutz (June 12, 2014)
My Topic:
Today's English Education in Korea Hinders the Students' Capacity to speak and write in English.
What I hope to learn from this source: I want to find the idealist way of acquiring second language that suggested by linguist. And I want to find the essence of learning language.
I want to extract some research results of a authoritative linguist, Stephen Krashen.
Notes:
1. "Language acquisition does not require extensive use of conscious grammatical rules, and does not require tedious drill." Stephen Krashen
2. "Acquisition requires meaningful interaction in the target language - natural communication - in which speakers are concerned not with the form of their utterances but with the messages they are conveying and understanding."Stephen Krashen
3. According to Krashen, 'learning' is less important than 'acquisition'. Acquisition and learning seems to be the same but they are a little different. Acquisition or acquired system is a process that occurs while one is unconscious as when the man acquires his first language. On the other hand, learning or learning system is the product of formal instruction and it comprises a conscious process differently with the former. For example knowledge of grammar rules.
4. Learning grammar is for monitoring not for priority. The role of the monitor is - or should be - minor, being used only to correct expression from 'so so' speech and to give speech a more 'polished' appearance.
5. But, the most important thing that should be accomplished in the first place is to make children feel interest.
Final thoughts
This source can be used for details in first paragraph of my essay.
